Where these two actually differ
- We flag Formaldehyde resins in textile dyes and finishes, Microfiber shedding from synthetic textiles, Adhesive/solvent residues and VOC off-gassing and PFAS in waterproof membrane and DWR finishes on the Merrell and not on the Timberland.
- We flag PTFE and fluorocarbon microparticle shedding, Formaldehyde resins in leather tanning and finishing, Azo dye residues in nubuck finish and Adhesive and glue volatiles at seams on the Timberland and not on the Merrell.
- The Merrell is textile upper with GORE-TEX waterproof membrane where the Timberland is Leather, nubuck, rubber sole with waterproof treatment, which is most of the difference in these two grades.
- These two are level, close enough that price and fit should decide it rather than our grade.
Both products run through the same public rubric: materials, coatings, brand disclosure, lab findings, and recalls, plus a beyond-PFAS hazard analysis. Grades are model-based estimates, not lab tests. How grades work →
