Model-based grades, not lab tests. We flunk more than we pass. How grading works

Does Nikwax Contain PFAS?

Nikwax says it has "never used ... PFAS in any of our products" (nikwax.com/en-us/environment/pfas). That is the company's own statement, and we found no third-party certification behind it. Most Nikwax products still grade 65 out of 100 in our data, not higher, because most of them are a durable water repellent coating, and a coating is a coating in our model regardless of what it's made of. Nikwax's leather conditioner, which has no coating at all, is the one product in our data that reaches 100.

What Nikwax says, and what it covers

Nikwax's statement covers its whole product range, its waterproofing sprays, wash-in treatments and leather care products alike. That is broader than most brands, which tend to make a claim about one coating or one line rather than the whole catalog.

Why most Nikwax products still grade 65, not 100

Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from public disclosures, not a lab test we commissioned. A DWR spray or wash-in treatment starts from the fabric-care baseline, and a coating, wax-based or silicone-based, adds a treatment factor even when the brand says it isn't fluorinated, because our model tracks whether a treatment exists separately from whether it's PFAS. Nikwax's PFAS-free statement takes credit off that penalty, which nets out to 65 across its TX. Direct spray, waterproofing wax and fabric and leather proof lines. Nikwax's Conditioner for Leather has no coating factor at all, just conditioning oils and waxes, so it reaches 100.

If you want more certainty

A wax-based leather conditioner with no water-repellent claim avoids the coating question entirely. Compare waterproofing options in our stain guard spray guide.

FAQ

Is Nikwax's PFAS-free claim independently verified?

Not that we could find. Nikwax's statement is its own, which is why it earns a claim credit rather than the larger credit a third-party certification would add.

Why doesn't Nikwax's waterproofing spray grade 100 if the brand says it's PFAS-free?

Because the spray is still a durable water repellent coating in our model, and a coating carries a treatment factor regardless of what chemistry a brand says it uses. Only a Nikwax product with no coating at all, like its leather conditioner, reaches 100.

Does a 65 grade mean Nikwax sprays are worse than PFAS-free claims suggest?

No. It reflects our model's rule that any coating carries a treatment factor, offset by Nikwax's statement, not a finding that the spray contains PFAS.
