Is There a List of PFAS Chemicals?
There are several official lists, and they count very differently because each uses its own definition. The EPA’s CompTox Chemicals Dashboard list of PFAS structures, updated in January 2026, holds 21,028 chemicals.
For its PFAS reporting rule under the Toxic Substances Control Act, finalized on October 11, 2023, the EPA defines PFAS by three chemical structures and says at least 1,462 PFAS may be covered, 770 of them in US commerce as of February 2023. The rule requires anyone who has manufactured or imported PFAS or PFAS-containing articles in any year since 2011 to report their uses, production volumes, disposal, exposures and hazards.
The EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory is narrower still, with 205 PFAS reportable for 2025 after nine were added that January. For cosmetics, the FDA has its own list of the 51 PFAS it found used as ingredients.
