What Fitbit says and does about PFAS
We found no PFAS policy published by Fitbit itself. Most Fitbit devices describe their bands only as a flexible, lightweight silicone material, which Android Authority called a vague description. Google, which owns Fitbit, has said it proactively limits PFAS in its products, and its supplier chemical specification caps PFHxA, one type of PFAS, at 25 ppb in all materials.

- StudyA University of Notre Dame study of 22 fitness tracker and smartwatch bands found elevated levels of perfluorohexanoic acid in nine of them, with some samples above 1,000 parts per billion. The study named no brands, so no result is attributed to this brand. University of Notre Dame ↗
- StudyThe same study tied its findings to bands manufactured using fluoroelastomers, and reported that elevated results were more common in bands costing more than about fifteen dollars. University of Notre Dame ↗
- Brand statementGoogle, which owns Fitbit, publishes a Restricted Substances Specification covering all Google-branded consumer hardware and accessories. It defines PFAS by structure, sets an all-materials limit of 25 parts per billion on perfluorohexanoic acid, and lists PFAS in all materials under a future phase-out requiring preauthorization rather than an existing prohibition.
