Where these two actually differ
- We flag UV degradation and additive leaching, Microplastics from mechanical wear and Odor and volatile organic compounds from manufacturing on the REI Co-op and not on the The North Face.
- We flag DWR coating composition (PFAS risk) and Coating off-gassing during manufacturing or initial use on the The North Face and not on the REI Co-op.
- The REI Co-op is Polypropylene storage bin, no water-resistant coating mentioned where the The North Face is Nylon with DWR waterproof coating (type unspecified), which is most of the difference in these two grades.
- The gap is 45 points, wide enough that this is not a close call, and the REI Co-op is the one to buy.
- We are less certain about the The North Face grade, at 35% confidence against 78%, because it discloses less.
Both products run through the same public rubric, which covers materials, coatings, brand disclosure, lab findings, and recalls, plus a beyond-PFAS hazard analysis. Grades are model-based estimates, not lab tests. How grades work →
