PFAS in Smart Rings, Why the Same Oura Ring Grades 85 and 75

We graded 35 smart rings, including Oura, Samsung Galaxy Ring, RingConn, Amazfit Helio and a range of smaller brands. All of them grade in our Excellent band, 14 at 85 out of 100 and 21 at 75. None has a water-repellent or other coating of concern on record.

The ten point split does not follow the brand or even the model. Oura Ring 5 appears at both 85 and 75, and so do Oura Ring 4, RingConn Gen 2 and Amazfit Helio listings. What separates them is whether a listing's record carries a credit for its titanium or steel body, and that is a fact about the record rather than about the ring.

How we graded these

Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from publicly available product information and manufacturer disclosures, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. None of the 35 rings carries a PFAS statement from its maker in our records, and every one carries the penalty for that silence. The 14 at 85 also carry a credit for a body material not associated with PFAS. The 21 at 75 do not. You can look up any ring in our PFAS product finder.

What the makers say the rings are made of

Oura says Oura Ring 4 is fully titanium, both inside and out, and describes developing a darker, more durable coating for the titanium on its black finish without naming what it is. Samsung lists the Galaxy Ring as a titanium outer surface with an epoxy inner surface that touches the skin, and rates it IP68 and 10 ATM for water and dust.

Neither describes a water-repellent treatment. The water resistance of a sealed ring comes from how it is built and sealed, not from a finish on the outside.

A correction to this guide

When this guide was first published, 21 of these rings graded 40 or 50, including listings for Oura, Samsung Galaxy Ring, RingConn and Amazfit Helio, because their records described an unspecified waterproof coating. Those coatings were never in the makers' descriptions. Our grading model had read water resistance ratings as evidence of a coating. On 16 September 2026 we removed that invented coating from 392 waterproof electronics records, including these rings, and rewrote the analysis on each product page.

Why the same ring still lands in two places

Smart ring bodies in our records are titanium, stainless steel, ceramic and sapphire. None of those is a fluorinated material. Some listings were recorded with a credit for that, and some, often for the same model, were not. That is the whole ten points.

We would rather show you that than pick whichever listing makes a brand look better. On the evidence we hold, we cannot say an Oura ring is lower concern than a Samsung Galaxy Ring, or the reverse.

What would actually move a ring

A smart ring is worn against the skin day and night, which is why people ask. The things that would move a ring in our model are specific. A maker stating the ring is made without PFAS, or independent verification. Neither is on record for any ring in this category today.

If this matters to you, the most useful questions to ask a ring maker are what coating, if any, is on a colored finish, and what the inner surface is made of. Samsung has already answered the second one in writing.

What to avoid

• Choosing one ring brand over another because of a grade in this category. The same models appear at 85 and 75.
• Reading water resistance ratings as a PFAS statement in either direction. A ring can be highly water resistant because of how it is sealed.
• Reading 85 as a clean bill. No ring maker here has said anything about PFAS.

Why there is no top pick

A pick would require the grade to reflect a difference between products, and here it reflects a difference between listings. Every smart ring we graded is in our Excellent band. We would choose a smart ring on fit, battery, sensors and subscription cost, and ask the maker the coating question directly. These grades are estimates built from disclosed materials, not laboratory proof, and nothing here is being called PFAS-free or safe by us.

Does the Oura Ring contain PFAS?

Our data cannot tell you. Oura says Oura Ring 4 is fully titanium inside and out, and titanium is not a fluorinated material. Oura rings grade 85 or 75 in our records depending on the listing, and no Oura PFAS statement or independent verification is on record. Oura describes a coating on its black finish without naming it.

Does the Samsung Galaxy Ring contain PFAS?

Samsung lists the Galaxy Ring as titanium outside with an epoxy inner surface, and describes no water-repellent coating. It grades 75 in our data, with the penalty for no PFAS statement from Samsung. We have not tested it.

Are titanium smart rings PFAS-free?

Titanium itself is not a fluorinated material, and none of the 35 rings we graded has a water-repellent coating on record. What no maker has done is state the ring is made without PFAS, so we record lower concern based on materials rather than a confirmed absence.

Is a waterproof smart ring coated with PFAS?

Not because it is waterproof. Water resistance in a sealed ring comes from its construction and seals. Our records had wrongly treated water resistance as evidence of a coating until 16 September 2026, when we corrected it.
