How Do You Dispose of Used Motor Oil?
Recycle it, never dump it. The EPA says used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water, a year’s supply for 50 people, and that used motor oil is insoluble and persistent, can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals, and is a major source of oil contamination of waterways that can pollute drinking water sources.
The EPA says to avoid spilling any when you collect it, to put it in a leak-proof can or container, and to check with local automobile maintenance facilities, waste collectors and government waste officials about when and where to drop it off for recycling. It says to drain and recycle used oil filters too, usually at the same collection centers.
State programs make it easier. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection says its voluntary used oil recycling program lets Floridians dispose of up to 5 gallons of used oil free of charge, and that approximately 200 million gallons of used oil are dumped on the ground or poured into storm drains nationwide every year. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality says used oil cannot go in the landfill, but is accepted at used oil collection centers and by many household hazardous waste programs.
