How Do You Dispose of Propane Tanks?
Not in the trash. Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says not to throw a propane tank in the trash or try to remove its valve, warning that a tank put in a dumpster can be crushed and ruptured when a trash truck compacts its load, releasing the rest of the propane and creating an explosion hazard. It says to take empty tanks to a municipal transfer station if available, or save them for household hazardous waste collection if your program accepts them.
For grill tanks, the department says most people take old tanks to a local propane dealer or supplier, where they are recovered, and reusable tanks are repainted and recertified. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency notes that many compressed gas cylinders still contain unused product and propellant even if they seem empty, such as fuel cylinders that will not support a usable flame.
Rules are set locally. The EPA considers leftover household products that can catch fire, react or explode under certain circumstances to be household hazardous waste, and says household hazardous waste is regulated at the state and local level. The City of Palmdale says California designates propane cylinders as household hazardous waste that is illegal to throw away in the trash, and that they must be taken to a designated drop-off facility or collection receptacle for recycling. California's SB 1280, approved by the governor on September 22, 2024, prohibits the sale of propane cylinders other than reusable or refillable ones starting January 1, 2028.
