What Is the White Dust From a Humidifier?

The EPA says researchers have documented that ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers are very efficient at dispersing minerals in tap water into the air, and that some consumers are bothered by a white dust that may appear on surfaces during use. It says several studies have shown these cool mist humidifiers can disperse microorganisms and minerals from their water tanks into indoor air.
The EPA says the possible health effects of microorganisms and minerals dispersed by home humidifiers are not fully understood, and that it may be prudent to take precautions to reduce exposure, particularly with ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers.
The EPA advises using bottled water labeled distilled, which will likely contain fewer minerals than most tap water, noting that distillation is the most effective method for removing minerals. It also advises emptying the tank, wiping all surfaces dry and refilling portable humidifiers daily to reduce microorganism growth, and cleaning them every third day to reduce buildup of scale and microorganisms.
