Is Drywall Dust Dangerous?
Sanding joint compound is the main exposure. NIOSH says construction workers who sand drywall joint compound are often exposed to high concentrations of dust and, in some cases, respirable silica, and that joint compounds are made from ingredients including talc, calcite, mica, gypsum and silica.
NIOSH says some of those ingredients have been associated with eye, nose, throat and respiratory tract irritation, that over time breathing the dust may cause persistent throat and airway irritation, coughing, phlegm and breathing difficulties similar to asthma, and that workers face an increased risk of silicosis and lung cancer when silica is present. In a 2024 health hazard evaluation of drywall sanding, NIOSH notes that breathing crystalline silica dust at work has been associated with silicosis, lung cancer and other airway problems, and linked to kidney and autoimmune diseases.
A separate issue is problem drywall. In testing done for the CPSC by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the top ten reactive sulfur-emitting drywall samples were all produced in China, and some had hydrogen sulfide emission rates 100 times greater than non-Chinese samples. The CPSC's home studies found elevated hydrogen sulfide in problem drywall homes and a strong association with metal corrosion, and federal law requires drywall made or imported for use in the United States on or after July 22, 2015 to meet the sulfur content limits in ASTM C1396-14a.
