Is Rubbing Alcohol Toxic?
The NIOSH Pocket Guide lists breathing, swallowing and skin or eye contact as exposure routes for isopropyl alcohol, with symptoms of eye, nose and throat irritation, drowsiness, dizziness, headache and dry, cracking skin. It lists a NIOSH recommended limit of 400 ppm as a time-weighted average with a 500 ppm short-term limit, and an OSHA permissible exposure limit of 400 ppm.
Isopropyl alcohol is also a hand sanitizer ingredient. The FDA says hand sanitizer is flammable and advises rubbing your hands until they feel completely dry before activities that may involve heat, sparks, static electricity or open flames. It says its testing found some hand sanitizers contaminated with potentially toxic types of alcohol and some without enough ethyl or isopropyl alcohol.
Swallowing is the bigger danger. The FDA says it found hand sanitizers containing food flavors or fragrances such as chocolate or raspberry, and that eating or drinking these products can cause serious injury or death. It also says 1-propanol, not to be confused with isopropyl alcohol, is not an acceptable hand sanitizer ingredient and can be toxic and life-threatening when ingested.
