What Is a Lead Service Line?

Under the EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, a lead service line is a service line made of lead or with a portion made of lead, and a lead-lined galvanized service line counts as a lead service line.

The rule, effective December 30, 2024, requires water systems to replace all lead service lines and certain galvanized lines under their control no later than 10 years after the compliance date, with additional time for some systems in limited circumstances. Its text says community water systems and non-transient non-community water systems must comply no later than November 1, 2027, except where otherwise specified. EPA's implementation page, last updated August 27, 2026, offers tips to help water systems with service line inventories and replacement requirements.

Lead matters for adults too. The EPA says adults exposed to lead can suffer cardiovascular effects, increased blood pressure and incidence of hypertension, decreased kidney function, and reproductive problems in both men and women. To check your own pipe, the EPA's Protect Your Tap guide says all you need is a penny or key and a magnet.
