What Is Dioxin?
Dioxins are a group of chemically related compounds that the WHO describes as persistent environmental pollutants. The EPA says the term dioxin commonly refers to the most toxic compound in the group, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin, or TCDD. Its Toxics Release Inventory analysis says dioxins persist in the environment, bioaccumulate in the food chain, and are toxic at much lower concentrations than many other chemicals.
Food is the main route. The WHO says more than 90 percent of human exposure is through food, mainly meat and dairy products, fish and shellfish.
The WHO says dioxins are highly toxic and can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones and cause cancer. It notes that IARC classified TCDD as a known human carcinogen based on animal and human epidemiology data, while adding that TCDD does not affect genetic material and that there is a level of exposure below which cancer risk would be negligible.
