This category is named for a feature that, in our data, is the thing dragging its grades down. Every pet bed we graded that is marketed as waterproof or water-resistant sits at 30 out of 100. The beds that grade well are not waterproof at all, they are ordinary polyester and foam beds with no repellent treatment described. Eight plain beds share the top grade of 75 out of 100, the West Paw Heyday Dog Bed, two Orvis ComfortFill beds and five Casper listings, all polyester or foam with no repellent treatment described. An earlier version of this guide put the West Paw Heyday at 100 on a MADE SAFE certification. We could not confirm that certification, MADE SAFE does not list West Paw, and we removed it on 17 September 2026, so the bed now grades 75 with the other plain beds. At the other end, three Ruffwear beds, two waterproof memory foam beds and an Orvis lounger all sit at 30 on water-resistant or waterproof treatments whose chemistry is never named. Every grade in this article is a model-based estimate built from publicly available materials disclosures, manufacturing descriptions and brand documentation, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. No bed in this category carried published independent lab data. The recorded concerns were PFAS in a DWR water-resistant treatment, PFAS in a waterproof coating, microfiber shedding from coating degradation, microfiber shedding and ingestion, and VOC off-gassing from polyurethane foam, the last of which applies to foam beds regardless of any coating. The honest problem with this category

People buy a waterproof pet bed for a specific reason, usually a puppy, an older dog, or a bed that lives outdoors. Telling you that the well-graded beds are the ones without waterproofing does not solve that problem, and we are not going to pretend it does. What our data supports is a different framing. If the bed needs to survive liquid, consider a plain bed with a washable, replaceable cover rather than a bed whose waterproofing is built into a coating nobody describes. That keeps the function and moves the material question to something you can replace cheaply.

Cons include that West Paw has no PFAS statement or certification in our record, so the grade rests on the absence of a described treatment, and it is not a waterproof bed.

The two Orvis ComfortFill beds and five Casper listings all grade 75 on plain polyester covers with foam or fiber fill and no repellent treatment described. Pros include conventional construction with nothing added. Cons include that neither brand publishes a PFAS statement, so these rest on the absence of a described treatment, and the foam beds carry a separate VOC off-gassing note that has nothing to do with PFAS.

Orvis appears at both ends of this category and the split is clean. The ComfortFill Couch Dog Bed is plain polyester and grades 75. The RecoveryZone Lounger carries a water-resistant treatment on a polyester blend and grades 30. Same brand, same broad materials, and the treatment is the only variable that moved.

The Poor tier, 30 out of 100

Seven beds share the bottom grade and every one is sold on keeping liquid out. The three Ruffwear products are outdoor-oriented beds with water-resistant treatments on polyester and nylon, which is exactly the application DWR finishes were developed for. The Petmaker Waterproof Memory Foam Pet Bed and the Tucker Murphy Kasper pillow pair memory foam with waterproof backings that are not described at all.

There are no pros to highlight from a PFAS grading standpoint across this tier. The con is consistent, the waterproofing is the product's reason to exist and no maker names the chemistry behind it.

• Any pet bed marketed as waterproof, water-resistant or all-weather where the brand does not name the treatment. That is every bed in the bottom tier here.
• Assuming an outdoor or adventure brand discloses more. The three most outdoor-focused beds in this category are all at 30.
• Assuming a brand grades consistently. Orvis sits at both 75 and 30 depending on whether the specific bed is treated.
• Reading a low grade as proof a bed contains PFAS. It reflects an undisclosed repellent finish, and no product here has published test data either way.

That is a statement about disclosure, not a laboratory finding about any specific bed.

What should I use if my dog has accidents?

Our data supports a plain bed with a washable, replaceable cover over a bed with built-in waterproofing that is never described, because it keeps the function while making the material question a cheap and replaceable one. That is a reasoning from our grades rather than veterinary advice.

Do the foam beds have a separate issue?
