Model-based grades, not lab tests. We flunk more than we pass. How grading works

Is GreenPan Actually PFAS-Free? What We Found

GreenPan says "GreenPan's Thermolon coated food contact surface is Free Of PFAS, including PTFE, PFOA, and their replacements." That is the company's own statement. We have not verified it, and we found no third-party PFAS certification for GreenPan, MADE SAFE or otherwise. On that record, GreenPan's ceramic pans and bakeware grade 70 out of 100 in our data, which is Good but not Excellent.

What GreenPan says, and what it covers

Thermolon is the name GreenPan gives its ceramic non-stick coating, which it markets as an alternative to PTFE, the fluoropolymer behind Teflon. GreenPan's statement is about the coated food contact surface. It does not describe other parts of a pan, such as handles, and no grade can speak to a coating that is scratched or worn.

We record statements like this as brand claims. A brand claim tells you what the company says about its own product. It is not a lab result, and it is not a certification.

Why GreenPan grades 70

Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from public disclosures, not a lab test we commissioned. A GreenPan ceramic pan starts from the cookware baseline of 30. A named ceramic coating adds 10, because it is still a coating, and GreenPan's PFAS statement takes 10 off. That leaves a grade of 70. A third-party PFAS certification would earn a larger credit, and GreenPan has none on record.

Across our data, 34 GreenPan products with a ceramic coating grade 70, from the GreenPan GreenLife Ceramic Nonstick Bakeware to skillets, saucepans and grill pans. A few GreenPan non-stick products whose records do not name the coating, such as the Rio Double Griddle and the Advanced Crepe Maker, grade 70, because an unnamed non-stick coating carries a 40 point penalty even with GreenPan's statement.

Caraway and Our Place make similar statements about their ceramic coatings, and neither is MADE SAFE certified either. Their ceramic cookware grades 70 on the same rule.

A correction to this article

An earlier version of this article said GreenPan GreenLife Ceramic Nonstick Bakeware graded Excellent, 100 out of 100, and that our model found no evidence of added PFAS. That overstated what we know. On 17 September 2026 we began grading every ceramic non-stick as a coating instead of giving it a safe material credit, and the bakeware now grades 70.

If you want more certainty

An uncoated pan avoids the coating question entirely. Stainless steel, cast iron and carbon steel need oil and some technique, but there is no non-stick layer to take on trust. Compare options in our cookware finder and bakeware finder. If you are checking your home more broadly, our water filters finder and our methodology page explain how we grade the rest.

FAQ

Is GreenPan cookware certified PFAS-free by an independent lab?

Not that we could find. GreenPan's PFAS statement is its own, and GreenPan is not MADE SAFE certified. Our 70 reflects that statement and the fact that the pan has a coating.

Does GreenPan's statement cover the whole pan?

It covers the Thermolon coated food contact surface. It does not describe handles or other parts.

Is GreenPan better than Teflon-style non-stick?

In our data, pans that name PTFE grade 5, and non-stick pans whose coating is not named and whose maker says nothing about PFAS grade 15. GreenPan's ceramic pans grade 70. That gap reflects what each maker discloses, not a lab comparison.
