Are Gel Nails and UV Nail Lamps Safe?

The open question is the UV lamp. In a study published in Nature Communications on January 17, 2023, University of California San Diego researchers exposed human and mouse cells to the ultraviolet dryers used to cure gel manicures, which generally use UV light in the 340 to 395 nm range, and found that one 20-minute session led to 20 to 30 percent cell death, while three consecutive 20-minute exposures caused 65 to 70 percent of the exposed cells to die.

The university said the exposure also caused mitochondrial and DNA damage in the remaining cells and mutations with patterns that can be observed in skin cancer in humans, and the published paper says the radiation can both damage DNA and permanently engrave mutations on the genomes of the cells tested. The researchers cautioned that a long-term epidemiological study would be required before stating conclusively that using these machines leads to an increased risk of skin cancers, and noted that the UV spectrum used in nail dryers has not been well studied.

Artificial nail products raise a separate issue. The FDA says artificial nails are made by reacting acrylic monomers with acrylic polymers, and that traces of reactive monomers left behind can cause redness, swelling and pain in the nail bed in people who have become allergic to methacrylates. It says no regulation specifically prohibits methyl methacrylate monomer in cosmetics, although in the early 1970s it received complaints of injury from artificial nails containing it, and it advises avoiding skin contact and having good ventilation when using nail products.
