Is Melamine Dinnerware Safe?

For serving, the FDA’s testing found little migration, but it advises against heating food in it. The FDA says a small amount of leftover melamine remains in melamine-formaldehyde tableware and can migrate very slowly into food, and that in tests melamine did not migrate into most foods, with the only measured migration from three of 19 plates and cups into acidic foods held at 160 °F for two hours.

Heat and acid raise it. The FDA says the amount of melamine that migrates can increase when highly acidic foods are heated to 160 °F or higher, and that food should not be heated on melamine dinnerware in a microwave, only in cookware labeled microwave-safe, before being served on melamine.

Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment says high temperatures and acidic food can break down melamine-formaldehyde resin and release more melamine and formaldehyde, that it should not be used to heat food in the microwave, and that no health effects are expected at low temperatures, such as with cold or lukewarm food.
