What is actually visible to someone holding the product, which for most of these is the only check available.
- Rarely named directly. Look instead for the preservatives that release it slowly.
- DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea and bronopol.
- "Formaldehyde-free" on a hair product does not rule out a releaser, and heat is what liberates it.
- A strong chemical smell from new composite wood furniture, which is off-gassing and fades long before emission stops.
