Is Silicone Toxic?

FDA rules permit silicone for repeated food contact, with conditions. Health Canada describes silicone as a synthetic rubber made of bonded silicon and oxygen. The FDA’s regulation for rubber articles meant for repeated use with food lists silicone elastomers among its permitted materials, and requires finished articles to be thoroughly cleaned before their first use with food.

Heat is the practical limit. Health Canada advises against using silicone bakeware above 220 °C (428 °F), because it will melt at high temperatures.

Research on what migrates from silicone is ongoing. Health Canada says a 2023 assessment found siloxanes are not harmful to human health or the environment, and that it is researching silicone bakeware to keep assessing any potential risks. A 2026 study of silicone food contact materials sold in China, published in Foods, found total cyclic siloxane migration above a proposed action limit for adults in several samples, with negligible risk for the siloxanes D4 and D5 but a potential concern for D3.
