We graded 206 air fryers from Ninja, Cosori, Philips, Instant, Cuisinart, Breville, Gourmia, Farberware, Emerald, Tefal and others. 189 of them grade 15 out of 100, because the basket or cooking surface carries a non-stick coating that the maker does not name. Five Tefal and T-fal air fryers recorded with PTFE grade 5. The best grades belong to five glass air fryers at 75.

How we graded these
Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from publicly available product information and manufacturer disclosures, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. Across the 204 air fryers the spread is nine at 75, one at 70, 189 at 15 and five at 5. One maker here has a PFAS statement on record. The Our Place Wonder Oven 6-in-1 grades 70 because its record carries Our Place's statement that its ceramic non-stick coating is made without PFAS, which takes 10 off, but does not name the oven's interior coating, so it keeps the 40 point penalty for a non-stick coating of undisclosed chemistry. No air fryer has third-party verification on record. Toaster ovens, commercial fryers and other appliances filed under air fryers are excluded. Look up any model in our PFAS product finder.
Why almost every air fryer grades 15
Most air fryer baskets are metal with a non-stick coating, so food releases cleanly at high heat. Non-stick coatings on cookware have historically been PTFE, a fluoropolymer in the PFAS family, though ceramic and other coatings are also used. When a maker describes a basket only as non-stick and says nothing about PFAS, our model cannot tell which it is, and that unresolved coating is the heaviest factor a product can carry short of a named fluoropolymer.
That is the position of Ninja, Cosori, Philips, Instant, Cuisinart, Breville, Gourmia and nearly every other brand here. It is not a finding that their coatings are PTFE. It is a record that none of them says.
The five at 5
Five Tefal and T-fal air fryers are recorded with PTFE coatings and grade 5, the bottom of our scale. T-fal says its nonstick contains PTFE and lists its Easy Fry Max, XXL and Oven air fryers among its products containing intentionally added PFAS, which moved the T-fal Easy Fry Max and the Easy Fry Oven from 15 to 5 on 17 September 2026. A different T-fal model had been recorded as presumed PTFE, a guess our grading model made rather than something T-fal states, and we corrected it to an unnamed non-stick coating at 15 on 16 September 2026.
Glass and stainless baskets
Five air fryers cook in a glass bowl and grade 75, because glass is recorded as a bare, uncoated material. Four stainless steel models grade 55. Their records describe stainless baskets or cavities without an applied coating, but they do not carry the material credit, which is a difference in the records rather than a finding against steel. If you consider a stainless model, check that the basket itself is not coated, since some stainless air fryers pair a steel body with a coated basket.
A correction to this guide
An earlier version of this guide said no air fryer in our database earned a passing grade, and it was published before we removed toaster ovens and commercial fryers from this category. We now grade five glass air fryers at 75. Two of them, from Fritaire and NutriChef, graded 65 until 16 September 2026, when we gave them the same bare-glass credit as the other glass models.
What to avoid
- Air fryers whose basket is described only as non-stick, with no coating type and no PFAS statement. That is 189 of 204 here.
- Air fryers that name PTFE, if avoiding fluoropolymers is your aim.
- Preheating an empty coated basket at maximum temperature for long periods. Overheating a coated surface is what our Teflon flu explainer covers.
- Reading 15 as proof of PFAS. It reflects a coating nobody names.

Most air fryers we graded have a non-stick basket whose coating type the maker does not state, so our data cannot confirm either way. Five Tefal and T-fal models are recorded with PTFE. Five glass air fryers have no coating on record.
Do Ninja air fryers have PFAS?
Ninja's basket air fryers in our data are recorded with non-stick coatings of unstated type and grade 15, and Ninja has no PFAS statement on record for them. Ninja's Crispi glass air fryers are recorded with a glass cooking vessel and grade 75.
Is a ceramic-coated air fryer basket PFAS-free?
Not necessarily by our data. Several baskets described as ceramic still grade 15 because the maker does not state the coating chemistry or make any PFAS statement. A named ceramic coating with a brand PFAS-free statement would grade better.
What is the best non-toxic air fryer?
