Is Teflon Banned?

Not nationally. The US FDA still lists nonstick coatings among the authorized uses of PFAS in food contact. But several states now ban the sale of cookware with intentionally added PFAS, and Minnesota’s pollution control agency says Teflon, as a PFAS, is prohibited from use in cookware there.

Minnesota’s ban took effect on January 1, 2025. Maine’s and Colorado’s took effect on January 1, 2026, and New Mexico’s and Rhode Island’s start on January 1, 2027. Connecticut requires labels from July 2026 and bans such cookware from January 1, 2028, and Vermont’s ban starts on July 1, 2028.

Each law covers cookware sold in that state, and the dates differ, so the answer depends on where you live.
