What the evidence says about PFAS in ceramic cookware
Ceramic nonstick coatings are made by a sol-gel process rather than from PTFE. When the Ecology Center tested pans labelled ceramic, it found silicon dioxide based coatings rather than PTFE, consistent with their claims, though it notes ceramic coatings tend to wear out sooner. The coating recipes are proprietary, and a NIST study detected nanoparticle release only under the harshest abrasion. We found no regulator statement on whether sol-gel coatings contain PFAS.
