Ello Beacon Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Tumbler

Excellent

Lower concern, as bare stainless steel and glass have minimal PFAS risk.

Verdict · BuyStainless steel and glass construction with no known hazardous coatings, leaching, or recalls; low contamination risk across categories.

Ello Beacon uses stainless steel and glass with vacuum insulation, inherently low-risk materials. No surface coatings or water-resistant treatments typical of PFAS use are present.

What Ello Beacon Vacuum Insulated Stainless is made of, ingredients and materials

The Ello Beacon uses food-grade stainless steel (outer and inner walls) with a vacuum insulation layer between them, plus glass or stainless steel internal contact surfaces depending on model variant. Stainless steel itself does not off-gas, leach heavy metals under normal use, or degrade into microplastics. The vacuum layer eliminates the need for foam or chemical insulators that might emit volatile organics. This material profile avoids nearly all hazards associated with coated cookware, plastic food-contact surfaces, or chemically-treated textiles.

⚠️

Bacterial growth in lid gaskets and seals

Silicone or rubber gaskets in the lid can harbor mold and bacterial biofilm if not disassembled and dried thoroughly after use. This is a maintenance issue, not a material toxicity issue, but common in vacuum-insulated tumblers.

⏳

Vacuum seal degradation and loss of insulation

Over time, the vacuum seal can fail due to thermal cycling or impacts, though this is a durability issue rather than a safety hazard. A failed seal will not release chemicals but will reduce insulation performance.

What’s reassuring

✅

Bare uncoated material

Recorded as a bare, uncoated material with no surface coating or treatment.

✅

Nickel leaching from stainless steel

Food-grade stainless steel (typically 304 or 316) leaches negligible nickel under normal cold or warm beverage conditions. No published studies or recalls document nickel migration from Ello tumblers; risk is minimal compared to low-quality stainless alloys.

Formaldehyde / VOCs

Stainless steel and glass do not require formaldehyde-releasing adhesives or coatings. The vacuum assembly may use minimal adhesives, but no off-gassing or VOC complaints are on record for this product line.

Heavy metals

The Beacon is typically sold with minimal exterior printing or embossing. No cadmium, lead, or antimony migration from decoration is reported; this is a low-risk area for this product.

The full breakdown

The brand's record and disclosure

Ello (owned by Contigo, part of the Newell Brands portfolio) does not publicly disclose PFAS testing or voluntary PFAS avoidance commitments. However, no recalls or safety controversies related to the Beacon tumbler or Ello drinkware are on record with the CPSC or major safety databases. The brand markets the product as BPA-free but does not provide third-party certification or material safety datasheets for independent verification.

How it compares in its category

Stainless steel and glass are materials not linked to PFAS concerns in drinkware applications. Most competitors (Hydro Flask, YETI, S'well) use similar core materials but may include silicone grip sleeves or rubber seals that could harbor bacteria if not cleaned regularly. The Beacon avoids non-essential coatings and adhesives, positioning it favorably on durability and chemical simplicity compared to plastic-heavy or heavily insulated plastic models.

If you buy it

Hand-wash the lid gaskets and seals weekly to prevent mold growth in the vacuum chamber seal zone. Do not expose to sustained temperatures above 100C (212F), as extreme heat can damage seals but will not compromise the stainless steel itself. Replace gaskets or lids if they crack, separate, or smell of mold after cleaning. Check the threads and vacuum seal annually; if insulation fails (tumbler becomes warm to touch with cold liquid inside), the vacuum layer has breached and the product should be retired.
