Watershed Drybag-Ocoee
Drybag waterproofing method undisclosed; moderate PFAS uncertainty.
Watershed drybags use vinyl coatings for waterproofing, but the brand does not disclose water-repellent coating chemistry or PFAS status. Waterproof treatments commonly contain PFAS.

What Watershed Drybag-Ocoee is made of, ingredients and materials
The Ocoee is constructed from PVC (vinyl) coated fabric, a standard waterproofing material for dry bags. PVC itself is chemically stable and does not leach plasticizers into contents under normal use because the fabric coating does not contact food or skin. The critical unknown is the waterproofing treatment applied to achieve durability and sealing, manufacturers typically use either Teflon-type coating-based treatments (Teflon-family coating coatings) or other proprietary polymers, and Watershed has not publicly disclosed which method they use for this model.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.
Teflon-type coating fume risk from waterproof coating
If the waterproofing uses Teflon-family coating (Teflon-type coating-based) chemistry, heating the drybag significantly above room temperature could theoretically release fumes. However, drybags are not heated during normal use; this is a low practical risk unless the bag is misused (e.g., placed near direct heat).
Coating degradation and microplastic shedding
PVC coatings on outdoor gear can degrade, crack, and shed particulates after extended UV exposure or mechanical wear. The Ocoee is not immune to this; visible degradation is a signal to retire the bag to prevent vinyl particles from contaminating stored contents.
VOC off-gassing from adhesives and PVC
New PVC-coated fabric products can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the vinyl and adhesive layers, particularly if stored in warm, poorly ventilated spaces. Airing out the bag for 24-48 hours before first use is a standard precaution; strong chemical odor that persists beyond one week is unusual and warrants ventilation or return.
PFAS
Graded separately; the coating method is undisclosed, making it impossible to rule out legacy PFAS chemistry. This is the primary reason to classify this product as 'care' rather than 'buy' without further information from the manufacturer.

Phthalates
The Ocoee's PVC coating is applied to fabric and does not contact skin or food during typical drybag use (storing gear). Phthalates in PVC are a concern only if the bag is misused for food storage or prolonged contact with consumables; no evidence of leeching under normal conditions.

The brand's record and disclosure
Watershed is a specialty outdoor gear manufacturer with no public record of PFAS statements, certifications (such as OEKO-TEX or Bluesign), or transparency reports on waterproofing chemistry. This is not unusual for small-to-mid outdoor brands, but it creates a gap, you cannot confirm whether their waterproofing relies on legacy PFAS-based formulations or newer alternatives. No recalls or safety controversies specific to Watershed drybags are documented.
How it compares in its category
PVC-coated fabric drybags are mid-range in the waterproofing spectrum. They are more durable than uncoated nylon but heavier and less breathable than TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or polyester-based alternatives. Many premium brands (e.g., Patagonia, Sea to Summit) have moved toward PFAS-free or reduced-PFAS coatings; Watershed's silence suggests they may still use older chemistry, though this is not confirmed. For a drybag storing gear (not food), the primary concern remains the PFAS uncertainty in the coating itself.
If you buy it
Store dry bags in a cool, well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight, as UV exposure can degrade PVC coatings over time. Do not use for food storage or contact with drinking water without confirmation of coating composition. Rinse the exterior after saltwater exposure to prevent mildew and coating wear. If the vinyl becomes tacky, cloudy, or flakes, discontinue use as the coating integrity is compromised. Consider reaching out to Watershed directly to request clarification on their waterproofing treatment; brand response may inform your confidence in the product.
