We graded 87 sofas and sectionals from Thomasville, AllModern, Crate and Barrel, IKEA, Ashley Furniture, West Elm, Pottery Barn, Macy's and others. 36 sofas with no treatment on record grade 75. Six sofas with a named stain-resistant finish grade 45, and 18 sofas with an unspecified stain or water treatment grade 30.
Stain-resistant and water-repellent coatings are the reason upholstered furniture shows up on a PFAS list at all. Historically, many of those coatings relied on fluorinated chemistry to keep fabric looking clean under daily use.

Why 36 sofas grade 75
These sofas, from Thomasville, AllModern, Crate and Barrel, IKEA, Ethan Allen, American Leather, Pottery Barn, Joybird, West Elm, Ashley Furniture, Haverty, Bob's Discount Furniture and Badcock, carry no stain-resistant or water-repellent finish on record. An earlier version of this guide had two of these sofas, from Crate and Barrel and Bob's Discount Furniture, down as carrying a likely stain or water treatment; we corrected both to no treatment on record on 17 September 2026 once we confirmed neither listing actually discloses one. That earns a material credit, and none of these brands has published a PFAS statement, which is why 75 is the ceiling rather than a higher score.
Why six sofas with a named finish grade 45
Six sofas, from Ashley Furniture, Ethan Allen, Haverty, IKEA and West Elm, are recorded with a specific stain-resistant treatment named on the listing rather than an unspecified one. Naming the treatment earns partial credit over an undisclosed coating, but it is still a treatment our model counts, which keeps all six below the untreated sofas.
Why 18 sofas grade 30
The largest group, 18 sofas from Macy's, Crate and Barrel, Ashley Furniture, Ethan Allen, Haverty, IKEA, Pottery Barn, West Elm, AllModern, Abbyson and Recliner King, carry a stain or water treatment whose composition is not disclosed at all. "Performance fabric," used on several Macy's listings, is common industry language for a treated, stain-resistant textile, a category historically associated with fluorinated finishes, and the lack of any stated chemistry is what keeps these at the bottom.
What to avoid
- "Performance fabric" or "stain-resistant" listings that don't name the chemistry. Twenty of the 60 sofas here fall into that gap.
- Assuming a retailer's whole catalog grades the same. Bob's Discount Furniture, Crate and Barrel, IKEA and West Elm each sell both an Excellent-graded and a Poor-graded sofa.
- Treating a named stain-resistant finish as equivalent to no finish at all. The six sofas at 45 still carry a treatment, just a disclosed one.

Can PFAS in upholstery affect my health?
