What Titleist Pro V1x Golf Balls is made of, ingredients and materials
Titleist Pro V1x uses a Surlyn ionomer-resin cover (a thermoplastic material) over a multilayer synthetic rubber/polymer core, with urethane-based paint or coating for the dimple pattern and finish. Ionomer is chemically stable and non-toxic under normal recreational conditions; it does not leach into skin during handling or play. The urethane topcoat is cured and does not off-gas meaningfully during storage or use at ambient temperatures, unlike some foam cushioning products.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.
Microplastic shedding or degradation into environment
Ionomer cover material can fragment when damaged or after extended UV exposure and water immersion; shed microplastics may accumulate in courses, water hazards, and surrounding soil. This is an environmental hazard class, not acute human health, but warrants responsible ball recovery practices.
PFAS
Golf balls require water-repellent coating finishes to maintain performance in wet conditions; industry standard practice uses PFAS-based Teflon-family coating. Titleist provides zero transparency; the company likely uses PFAS but does not quantify or disclose it. (Graded separately as PFAS, 40/100 Poor.)
Source, ATSDR ↗What’s reassuring
Teflon-type coating / volatile organic compound (VOC) off-gassing from urethane coating
Urethane topcoats are fully cured at manufacture and do not release fumes during storage or play at ambient temperature. No reports of respiratory irritation or off-gassing linked to this product exist in available literature.
Heavy metals
Ionomer and urethane are inert polymers; standard paint pigments used in golf ball finishes do not leach into skin or saliva during normal use. No cadmium, lead, or antimony contamination has been reported for Titleist products.
Source, FDA ↗Skin sensitization or contact irritation from handling
No documented allergic reactions or dermatitis attributable to ionomer or urethane golf ball contact have been recorded. Titleist Pro V1x is suitable for all skin types in normal play.
The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
Titleist (owned by Acushnet Holdings) does not publicly disclose PFAS content, manufacturing specifications, or material sourcing transparency reports. The company has not faced major recalls or documented safety controversies related to ionomer golf balls in the consumer literature. No third-party independent testing of this specific model for heavy metals, volatile organics, or hazardous additives has been published in peer-reviewed sources.
How it compares in its category
Premium golf balls (Pro V1x, Callaway Chrome Soft, Bridgestone Tour B) all use similar ionomer or thermoplastic polyurethane covers and are functionally equivalent in material hazard profile. Budget alternatives and range balls may have thicker, lower-grade polymer coatings but do not pose elevated acute health risk. The primary differentiator across brands is PFAS use in water-repellent (water-repellent coating) finish coatings, which no major manufacturer discloses.
If you buy it
Store Pro V1x balls at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat (above 130F degrades polymer longevity, not safety). Wash with mild soap and water only; do not soak or expose to solvents, which can damage the urethane finish. Replace balls when visible cover cracking, cuts, or compression loss occur (typically 50-100 rounds of play depending on turf condition). Skin contact during normal handling poses no documented risk.
