Is CND Vinylux Polish non-toxic? What it is made of
CND Vinylux is a UV-cured gel-polish hybrid (sometimes called a gel-polish or soft gel) composed of oligomers, acrylates, photoinitiators, and volatile organic solvents. The formula is designed to cure under UV light and last 2-3 weeks without chipping, which requires stronger resin systems than traditional lacquer. The solvents (typically toluene, xylene, or acetone) evaporate during application and can pose inhalation concerns in poorly ventilated spaces.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Volatile organic solvents (toluene, xylene, acetone)
Standard in gel-polish formulations; inhalation during application in enclosed spaces or by frequent users (nail technicians) poses respiratory and CNS effects. CND does not specify exact solvent composition on consumer packaging.
Photoinitiators and reactive acrylates
UV-cured resins require photoinitiators (often benzophenone derivatives or camphorquinone); some are skin sensitizers at high concentration. Uncured polymer residue may contact skin during application or removal, particularly during removal without proper soaking.
UV lamp safety (cumulative exposure)
Repeated UV exposure during curing is low per session but cumulative with frequent use; no direct causal link to skin cancer is established for nail lamps, but some dermatologists recommend sunscreen as precaution.
PFAS
CND has not disclosed whether Vinylux contains PFAS or fluorinated slip agents; industry-standard gel polishes sometimes include these for durability. Separate from PFAS grade already assigned.

Base material not linked to PFAS
The main material recorded for this product is not one associated with PFAS.
Lead
No recalls or public test data specific to CND Vinylux. Industry-wide testing by independent labs has not flagged gel polishes as high-risk for heavy metals, but CND does not independently verify or disclose.
Source, ATSDR ↗Formaldehyde / VOCs
Traditional nail lacquers sometimes contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde resin; UV-cure gels like Vinylux typically do not, but CND has not publicly disclosed formulation details.

The brand's record and disclosure
CND (Creative Nail Design) is a subsidiary of Revlon and is established in the professional nail market. The brand has not publicly disclosed testing for PFAS, heavy metals, or detailed chemical safety profiles on consumer-facing resources. No major safety recalls or adverse event patterns are on record for Vinylux specifically. CND's parent company Revlon filed for bankruptcy in 2022, which may have affected transparency initiatives.
How it compares in its category
Vinylux sits in the mid-tier gel-polish segment. Competitors like Shellac (CND's own premium line), OPI, and Sally Hansen offer similar UV-cure formulations with comparable solvent profiles. Non-UV lacquers (traditional nail polish) avoid light exposure but cure more slowly; gel systems like Vinylux trade that trade-off for durability. Most gel polishes in this category lack independent third-party certification for heavy metals or endocrine disruptors.
If you buy it
Use Vinylux in well-ventilated spaces or with a nail dust mask to minimize solvent inhalation during application. Limit UV lamp exposure to the time needed for curing (typically 2 minutes per layer) and consider applying broad-spectrum sunscreen to hands beforehand if concerned about cumulative UV. Replace or remove the polish every 2-3 weeks as recommended to avoid bacterial growth under the coating. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wash hands immediately after application.
