Orly Ephemeral Nail Lacquer
Skip until Orly discloses PFAS status or seeks third-party verification.
Orly Ephemeral is a standard nitrocellulose-based nail lacquer with no public PFAS disclosures or certifications. Nail polish formulations can contain fluorinated compounds for shine and durability, but Orly makes no claims either way.

Is Orly Ephemeral Nail Lacquer non-toxic? What it is made of
Orly Ephemeral is a conventional organic nitrocellulose-based nail lacquer, the industry standard formulation. Nitrocellulose itself is not a health hazard at the concentrations used in nail polish, but the solvent package (typically xylene, toluene, dibutyl phthalate/DBP) carries inhalation and dermal risks during application. The lacquer dries through solvent evaporation, not polymerization, so volatile organic compound (VOC) off-gassing occurs during application and briefly after, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from solvent package
Standard nitrocellulose lacquers release xylene and toluene during application and drying. Inhalation of these solvents can cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation, particularly with repeated exposure in enclosed spaces or during manicure work.
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) exposure
Orly has not disclosed whether Ephemeral contains DBP, a plasticizer traditionally used in nail polish to prevent brittleness. Many conventional brands still include DBP; if present, dermal and inhalation exposure occurs during application, with possible developmental effects of concern during pregnancy.
Chip and dust inhalation from worn lacquer
As the lacquer chips over 1-2 weeks of wear, small particles may be inhaled or ingested if hands are placed near the mouth. This poses minimal acute risk but repeated exposure from frequent polish use warrants awareness.
What’s reassuring
Base material not linked to PFAS
The main material recorded for this product is not one associated with PFAS.
Formaldehyde / VOCs
No public record of formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers in Orly Ephemeral, and modern nitrocellulose systems do not typically require formaldehyde. However, Orly's lack of ingredient disclosure means this cannot be ruled out with certainty.
Source, ATSDR ↗Heavy metals
Nail lacquers may contain titanium dioxide, iron oxides, and synthetic dyes; contamination with cadmium or lead in pigment batches is rare in US-marketed products but not formally tracked by Orly. Third-party testing is unavailable for this product.

The brand's record and disclosure
Orly has not published ingredient transparency reports, PFAS disclosure statements, or sought third-party certifications (e.g., EWG VERIFIED, Cradle to Cradle). The brand maintains a publicly silent stance on chemical safety beyond standard regulatory compliance. No significant safety recalls or controversies are on record for this specific product line, though absence of disclosure does not confirm absence of concern chemicals.
How it compares in its category
Orly Ephemeral sits in the conventional nail lacquer tier alongside Sally Hansen and Essie; it offers no claimed reformulation toward 3-free, 5-free, or solvent-reduced formulas that competitors market. Brands like Zoya and Ella+Mila explicitly market reduced-toxicity profiles and publish ingredient lists; Orly does not differentiate on safety. For budget-conscious consumers, Ephemeral is competitively priced, but transparency advantage lies with brands offering phthalate-free or xylene-free variants.
If you buy it
Apply in well-ventilated areas (open window, fan, or outdoors) to minimize solvent inhalation, especially for frequent users. Allow 2-3 minutes of air-dry time before touching to reduce skin contact with wet lacquer. Replace the bottle cap immediately after use to minimize evaporative loss and maintain formula stability. Do not use near heat sources or open flame; store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to slow degradation.
