What RTIC Essential Tumbler is made of, ingredients and materials
The RTIC Essential Tumbler is constructed from 18/8 stainless steel (also called 304-grade) with a double-wall vacuum insulation layer. Stainless steel does not leach metals into cold or hot beverages under normal use because the chromium oxide surface layer is chemically stable and unreactive with water or acidic drinks. Unlike ceramic or enamel-coated cookware, there is no glaze, paint, or coating to degrade, chip, or release contaminants over time.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Lid gasket/seal degradation
RTIC tumblers use a silicone or rubber gasket in the lid. Over time and with repeated washing, gaskets can harden, crack, or develop mold if not fully dried. Deteriorated seals do not leach hazardous substances but may harbor bacterial growth if stored damp.
Bacterial growth in insulation gap
If the vacuum seal is compromised or the tumbler is damaged, moisture could enter the insulation chamber and potentially harbor mold or bacteria. This is a mechanical failure issue, not a chemical hazard, but warrants inspection if the tumbler is dented or dropped.
What’s reassuring
Base material not linked to PFAS
The main material recorded for this product is not one associated with PFAS.
Stainless steel corrosion (localized pitting)
304-grade stainless steel is resistant to corrosion from normal beverages and tap water. No documented corrosion or metal leaching issues have been reported for this product or similar RTIC tumblers.
Coating or paint off-gassing
The exterior finish is bare stainless steel with no paint, powder coat, or adhesive interior linings. There is no VOC or off-gassing risk from coatings.
Aluminum leaching (interior wall)
The vacuum insulation layer is sealed between the inner and outer stainless steel walls and does not contact beverages. The interior drinking surface is stainless steel, not aluminum, so aluminum leaching is not a concern.
The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
RTIC does not publicly disclose material certifications, testing data, or PFAS-related manufacturing statements on its website or product documentation. The brand has no documented recalls or safety controversies in public consumer databases. Their silence on chemical safety disclosure is typical among mid-market drinkware makers but limits third-party verification of claims.
How it compares in its category
This product sits in the standard insulated tumbler category alongside Yeti, Hydro Flask, and store brands. All use similar stainless steel construction, so material safety profiles are equivalent. RTIC's price point is lower, but there is no chemical safety advantage or disadvantage versus competitors in this segment.
If you buy it
Hand-wash or use a dishwasher per instructions; avoid prolonged contact with abrasive scrubbers that may scratch the exterior finish. Stainless steel tumblers have no temperature limits for beverages under normal use. Replace the lid gasket if it cracks or develops mold; this is the only component that may degrade with age. Do not use with boiling liquid immediately after filling, as vacuum seal stress can develop over years of temperature cycling.
