Is Seche Nail Lacquer non-toxic? What it is made of
Seche Nail Lacquer is a nitrocellulose-based formula, the standard backbone of nearly all nail polishes. Nitrocellulose itself is inert when cured on the nail, but it requires plasticizers (typically dibutyl phthalate or DHP alternatives) and organic solvents like toluene, xylene, and formaldehyde to stay liquid and adhere. The resins and film-formers in this product help it dry and harden. The concern is not the cured polish on your nail, but inhalation of fumes during application and exposure to uncured wet lacquer.
What’s concerning

Formaldehyde / VOCs
Nitrocellulose lacquers inherently contain organic solvents to remain liquid. Inhalation during application is the primary exposure route; poorly ventilated use (bathroom, closed bedroom) increases risk of headache, dizziness, and respiratory irritation. Seche does not advertise removal of these solvents, so assume standard solvent load.
Source, ATSDR ↗Phthalates
Nitrocellulose requires plasticizers to maintain flexibility. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is traditional; many brands now use diethyl phthalate (DEP) or non-phthalate alternatives. Seche's ingredient list does not specify which plasticizer is used, so status cannot be confirmed without lab analysis or updated brand disclosure.
Source, ATSDR ↗Formaldehyde / VOCs
Formaldehyde is a byproduct of many nail lacquer formulations and is typically present in trace amounts in the bottle and released as vapor during application. Professional manicurists in salons with poor ventilation face chronic exposure; home users have lower risk if windows are opened. Not specific to Seche, but standard for the category.
Source, ATSDR ↗Skin and eye irritation from wet lacquer
Contact with uncured lacquer can cause contact dermatitis, especially on cuticles or broken skin. The solvents are potent irritants. This is a usage hazard, not a formulation defect, but worth noting if you have sensitive skin or apply polish frequently without protective measures.
PFAS
Nail lacquers have historically underreported or not tested for PFAS. Seche's silence on PFAS testing, combined with a mid-range safety grade (65/100), suggests potential presence. The company's lack of transparency is the primary concern; absence of disclosure is not absence of hazard.

The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
Seche is a long-standing US nail polish brand owned by Revlon. The company has not published detailed ingredient transparency reports or third-party PFAS testing for its lacquer line, despite growing pressure in the beauty industry. Seche does not advertise 3-Free, 5-Free, or higher safety certifications (which exclude phthalates, formaldehyde, toluene, and other solvents). This silence on PFAS and limited voluntary disclosure is the primary reason for caution, not evidence of contamination.
How it compares in its category
Seche Nail Lacquer sits in the mainstream mid-tier. Many competitors (Essie, OPI, Sally Hansen) now offer or highlight 3-Free, 5-Free, or even 7-Free formulas; some indie brands publish PFAS test results. Seche's lack of certification or transparency marketing places it behind category leaders on disclosure, though this does not confirm higher hazard. It is more transparent than ultra-budget brands but less so than premium or indie alternatives targeting conscious consumers.
If you buy it
Apply in well-ventilated spaces, open a window or use a fume extractor, and avoid prolonged inhalation of wet lacquer. Replace every 12 to 18 months; old polish thickens and may separate, signaling solvent breakdown. Avoid contact with skin, especially cuticles, and wash hands after application. Do not use nail lacquer during pregnancy or if immunocompromised without consulting a healthcare provider; animal studies show some solvent neurotoxicity at high exposure levels, though occupational salon settings carry far higher risk than consumer use.
