What Shout Color Safe Set In Carpet Cleaner is made of, ingredients and materials
Shout Color Safe is a water-based surfactant solution blended with polymers designed to suspend and lift dirt from carpet fibers without bleaching dyes. The active cleaning agents are anionic and nonionic surfactants, which break down grease and oil-based stains. Polymer additives help prevent redye (dirt reattachment) and improve stain release. No coating is applied to fabric; the product works via chemical emulsification and remains on the fiber until rinsed or vacuumed.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Stain-resistant finish
Stain-resistant finishes are a common PFAS use.
Surfactant skin and eye irritation
Surfactants in carpet cleaners are skin and eye irritants at direct contact. Shout product labels warn against eye contact and inhalation. Risk is manageable with normal use (spray, don't immerse hands) but elevated if misapplied.
Synthetic fragrance allergens and respiratory sensitization
Shout Color Safe contains fragrance additives not disclosed by specific chemical name. Fragrance mixtures can trigger contact dermatitis and asthma-like respiratory symptoms in sensitized individuals, especially in enclosed spaces or with repeated exposure.
Polymer microparticle shedding and inhalation
Polymer additives in the spray may aerosolize during application or dry on carpet as fine particles. Long-term respiratory impact of inhaled synthetic polymer particles is not well-established, but inhalation should be minimized via ventilation.
PFAS
Aqueous stain removers in this class sometimes contain PFAS-based water and oil-repellent additives, but Shout does not disclose this. The PFAS grade of 55/100 reflects insufficient transparency rather than confirmed absence.
Source, ATSDR ↗Dye transfer or polymer residue on light-colored fabrics
Despite the 'Color Safe' label, overuse or improper rinsing of polymer-based sprays can leave a sticky or discolored film, especially on pale carpets. This is cosmetic rather than a health hazard but affects product performance and may trap dirt.
The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
Shout (owned by SC Johnson) does not publicly disclose a full ingredient list or hazard assessment for this product beyond basic warning labels. SC Johnson has faced historical scrutiny over fragrance transparency and PFAS use in other product lines, but has not issued recalls specific to this stain remover. The brand provides safety data sheets to professionals but consumer-facing ingredient detail is minimal.
How it compares in its category
Carpet stain removers in this category typically rely on surfactants and water, making Shout Color Safe typical rather than distinctive. Enzyme-based or plant-derived alternatives (e.g., Zout, Fels-Naptha) offer similar performance with less synthetic polymer load. Shout's brand recognition and broad availability come at the cost of less transparent ingredient sourcing than smaller or certified eco-label products.
If you buy it
Apply in a well-ventilated space; spray directly onto stain, let sit 5-10 minutes, then rinse or vacuum. Avoid spraying on skin or into eyes; if contact occurs, rinse immediately. Do not use on delicate fabrics or undyed natural fibers without testing a hidden area first. Store away from heat and out of reach of children; replace if the spray mechanism fails or the solution separates, as homogeneity is essential for even stain treatment.
