What HardCore Carnivore Butcher Paper is made of, ingredients and materials
Weston HardCore Carnivore Butcher Paper is kraft paper (cellulose fibers) with a grease-resistant coating applied to one or both sides. Kraft paper itself is low-hazard, but grease resistance in food-contact paper is conventionally achieved using fluorochemical coatings (PFAS-based). The coating prevents oils and fats from bleeding through, which is functional for raw meat storage but introduces the chemical hazard of persistent, bioaccumulative fluorinated compounds. Weston has not publicly disclosed the chemistry of this coating.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.
PFAS
Grease-resistant food-contact coatings in kraft paper conventionally use fluorinated compounds; Weston discloses neither chemistry nor PFAS content. Migration risk is elevated with fatty foods, heat, and acidic conditions.
Source, ATSDR ↗Coating degradation and migration
Kraft paper coatings can peel, crack, or leach under moisture, heat, or mechanical stress. No published durability or migration testing for Weston's formulation is available; risk increases with time and temperature.
Microplastic or coating particle shedding
Worn or damaged grease-resistant coatings may shed particles into fatty foods; kraft paper itself does not fragment into microplastics but coating delamination is a known issue in lower-cost food papers.
Ink or printing dyes (if printed labeling used)
If Weston's butcher paper carries printed branding or instructions, food-contact inks should comply with FDA CFR 176.170; compliance is not publicly confirmed for this product line.
What’s reassuring
Bacterial growth on paper surface
Paper itself is susceptible to microbial growth if kept damp, but this is a storage/hygiene issue rather than a product defect. Proper dry storage mitigates risk.
How is this PFAS grade calculated?
The brand's record and disclosure
Weston is a mid-market kitchen equipment and food-storage brand owned by Weston Brands LLC. The company has not published ingredient disclosures, PFAS reduction commitments, or third-party certifications for its butcher paper line. No recalls or regulatory findings specific to this product are on record. The silence on fluorochemical use is typical for smaller food-packaging manufacturers but represents a transparency gap compared to leading competitors who now disclose PFAS-free or PFAS-reduced alternatives.
How it compares in its category
Standard butcher paper with grease-resistant coatings (including Weston's) historically relied on C8 PFOA or C6 alternatives; many premium meat-storage papers now market PFAS-free versions using silicone or other non-fluorinated barriers. Weston's product sits in the conventional mid-tier segment without disclosed alternatives. Uncoated kraft butcher paper exists but offers no grease barrier. This product is cheaper than branded PFAS-free options but trades cost for unknown chemical exposure.
If you buy it
Use for wrapping raw or briefly refrigerated meats only; avoid hot or steam-wrapped foods, as heat can accelerate coating degradation and potential leaching. Do not microwave or place directly on heating surfaces. Replace paper if visible wear, peeling, or discoloration appears. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Consider purchasing PFAS-free butcher paper if this product will contact hot foods or be used frequently for extended storage. Supervise children's contact.
