Model-based grades, not lab tests. We flunk more than we pass. How grading works

PFAS in Fast-Casual Food Packaging, No Wrapper Here Clears the Bar

We graded 13 fast-casual food wrappers, mostly Burger King sandwich wrap spanning vintage and current stock, plus items from Panda Express, Chick-fil-A and Cava. Every one of them grades the same, 25 out of 100. None carries a stated fluorine-free treatment, and none of these brands has published a PFAS statement for the wrapper we graded.

There is no standout winner in this category today. If minimizing exposure matters more to you than convenience, a reusable container removes the coating question entirely.

Summary comparison table

Product PFAS grade Material as recorded
Burger King Fast Food Wrapping Paper Poor, 25/100 Paper, grease-resistant coating unspecified
Panda Express Fast Food Wrap Paper Poor, 25/100 Bleached paper, grease-resistant coating
Chick-fil-A Veggie Wrap Poor, 25/100 Paper/paperboard, grease-resistant coating
Cava Fast Food Paper Poor, 25/100 Paper, grease-resistant coating

How we graded these

Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from publicly available product information and manufacturer disclosures, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. Across the 13 wrappers the spread is 13 at 25. Look up any wrapper in our PFAS product finder.

Why every wrapper here grades 25

Fast-casual sandwich wrap needs to resist grease and moisture long enough to hold a burger or a wrap without soaking through, and a fluorinated coating has historically been the cheapest way to hit that performance target. Every wrapper we graded, eight from Burger King spanning vintage 1970s stock through current wrap, plus Panda Express, Chick-fil-A and Cava, is recorded with a grease-resistant coating of unstated composition, and none of these brands has a PFAS statement on file. That combination is what keeps all 13 at the same grade.

What to avoid

  • Assuming a plain-looking wrapper is better than a branded one. None of the 13 wrappers here carries a stated fluorine-free treatment regardless of branding.
  • Reusing vintage or collectible wrappers as actual food packaging. Decades-old treated paper adds age and storage uncertainty on top of an already low grade.
  • Treating gift-wrap novelty items, like Chick-fil-A's branded gift paper, as exempt from the same scrutiny if you'd consider reusing them for food.

Our pick

There is no product in this category we can point to as lower concern, and every wrapper here grades the same. If minimizing potential exposure matters to you, a washable container is the more productive choice for everyday meals than any wrapper on this list.

FAQ

Does a Poor grade mean these wrappers definitely contain PFAS?

Not necessarily. A Poor grade reflects the absence of a fluorine-free statement combined with a grease-resistant coating of unstated composition, the construction historically associated with PFAS treatment in fast-food wrap, not a lab result on a specific unit.

Has any fast-casual chain made a PFAS-free claim for its wrappers?

Not among the 13 wrappers we've graded. We found no brand-stated or third-party verified PFAS-free claim tied to any of them.

Is it safe to reuse a vintage fast-food wrapper for food?

We'd frame it as lower-concern versus higher-concern rather than safe versus unsafe. Reusing a decades-old wrapper for food adds the same materials uncertainty as buying new, plus unknown age and storage history, so displaying it rather than eating out of it is the more cautious choice.
