Model-based grades, not lab tests. We flunk more than we pass. How grading works

PFAS in Muffin Tins, GreenPan Leads, Silicone Follows, Metal Trails

We graded 15 muffin tins. Three GreenPan ceramic pans lead at 70 on a named coating and a brand PFAS statement. Seven silicone pans and cup sets, sold under a mix of brand names including Trudeau, Silikomart and King Arthur Baking Company, grade 65 on the material alone. Five metal pans from Calphalon and OXO, including one marketed as ceramic, grade 15 on an undisclosed nonstick coating.

Summary comparison table

Product PFAS grade Coating as recorded
GreenPan GreenLife Ceramic Nonstick Muffin Pan Good, 70/100 Thermolon ceramic coating, brand PFAS statement on file
Trudeau Jumbo Silicone Muffin Pan Good, 65/100 Silicone, no coating, no PFAS statement
King Arthur Baking Company Silicone Muffin Cups Good, 65/100 Silicone, no fluoropolymer or PTFE coating
Calphalon Gourmet 24-Cup Mini Muffin Pan Bad, 15/100 Hard-anodized aluminum, nonstick coating unspecified
OXO Good Grips Ceramic Coated Metal Muffin Pan Bad, 15/100 Ceramic-coated steel, chemistry unnamed

How we graded these

Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from publicly available product information and manufacturer disclosures, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. Across the 15 pans the spread is three at 70, seven at 65 and five at 15. Look up any pan in our PFAS product finder.

A correction to this guide

GreenPan's two GreenLife ceramic pans graded 90 until 17 September 2026, when we began grading every ceramic nonstick coating as a coating rather than giving it a safe-material credit, which brought both to 70. The GreenPan Reserve Bakeware pan graded Bad in an earlier version of this guide; after the same correction it carries the identical factors as the GreenLife pans and now grades 70 as well. Grading applies pan by pan, not brand by brand, so a corrected fact about one GreenPan model doesn't automatically extend to another without checking.

Why GreenPan leads at 70

All three GreenPan pans use the brand's Thermolon ceramic coating and carry GreenPan's statement that the coating is free of PFAS, including PTFE and PFOA. That is a brand statement we have not independently verified, but it is the only muffin tin in this guide with both a named coating and a PFAS statement on file.

Why the silicone pans grade 65

Silicone is a silicon-oxygen polymer, chemically distinct from PFAS, and earns a material credit on that basis. None of these brands, including Trudeau, Silikomart, Boxiki and King Arthur Baking Company, says anything about PFAS, which is the 15-point gap keeping all seven below the GreenPan pans.

Why the metal pans grade 15

All five, three from Calphalon and two from OXO, carry a nonstick coating whose chemistry is not disclosed, including the OXO pan marketed as ceramic. OXO doesn't say what that coating is made of, and neither Calphalon nor OXO has a PFAS statement on file for these pans, which is what keeps all five at the bottom regardless of the ceramic label on one of them.

What to avoid

  • Metal nonstick muffin pans that don't name the coating chemistry. All five pans at the bottom of this guide share that gap.
  • Assuming "ceramic" on the label settles the question. OXO's ceramic-coated pan grades the same as its plain nonstick pan because neither names the actual chemistry.
  • Bakeware marketed only as "PFOA-free." PFOA is one PFAS compound among thousands, so that claim is narrower than a full PFAS statement.

Our pick

Based on available materials and data, the three GreenPan ceramic pans carry the strongest model-based estimate here at 70, on GreenPan's own statement rather than third-party certification. If you'd rather avoid a metal-and-coating construction altogether, the silicone pans at 65, including Trudeau, Silikomart and King Arthur Baking Company, are a reasonable middle tier.

FAQ

Does a high grade mean a muffin tin is completely free of PFAS?

No. The GreenPan pans' 70 reflects a model-based estimate from disclosed materials and GreenPan's own statement, not a laboratory-confirmed absence of PFAS.

Do all GreenPan muffin pans grade the same?

As of 17 September 2026, yes, all three we track grade 70 on the same factors. Grading is still applied pan by pan, so check the specific product rather than the brand name.

Is silicone bakeware automatically lower concern than nonstick metal bakeware?

Generally its chemistry differs from PFAS-based coatings, reflected in the Good scores across the silicone pans here. None reach the top tier, though, because none of these makers says anything about PFAS.
