What the evidence says about PFAS in deodorant
In a February 2024 report published with Environmental Health News, Mamavation said an EPA-certified lab found organic fluorine, an indicator of PFAS, in 6 of 15 deodorants, natural and conventional alike. Organic fluorine is a screen rather than a measurement of specific PFAS, and Mamavation notes it can also pick up other fluorinated compounds. The US FDA reports that tetrafluoropropene, a propellant covered in its PFAS report, is used in deodorant sprays, and says no federal rule specifically bans PFAS added to cosmetics. Washington has banned cosmetics with intentionally added PFAS since January 2025 and counts deodorant as a cosmetic.
