PFAS in Silicone Prep Mats and Flexible Cutting Boards, 75 Graded
We graded 75 silicone prep mats, pastry mats and flexible cutting boards from Silpat, Silikomart, Tovolo, Norpro, Joseph Joseph, Cuisinart, Wilton, Good Cook and others. 77 of them grade 65 out of 100, and one Cuisinart mat recorded with an unspecified coating grades 15.
This is a category where the material does the work. Silicone, rubber and polypropylene release food and grip the counter without an added coating, and almost none of these products has one on record.

How we graded these
Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from publicly available product information and manufacturer disclosures, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. Across the 78 products the spread is 77 at 65 and one at 15. Look up any mat in our PFAS product finder.
Why nearly every mat grades 65
Nearly every product here carries the same two things, a credit for a material not associated with PFAS and a penalty because the maker says nothing about PFAS. That is 65. An earlier version of this guide graded the Demarle Silpat Non-Stick Baking Mat 90 on a Silpat PFAS-free claim. We could not find that statement from Silpat or Demarle, so we removed it on 17 September 2026, and the mat now grades 65 with the other plain silicone mats.
An earlier version of this guide also listed five mats at 55, including two Silikomart baking mats. Those silicone and polypropylene records had never received the material credit, which was a difference in the record rather than in the mat. On 17 September 2026 we added the credit, and all five now grade 65 with the other plain mats.
The Cuisinart 36-in Silicone-Coated Mat at 15 is the one product whose record describes a coating over a base that is not identified. Silicone itself is not fluorinated, but a coated mat of unknown construction keeps the unnamed coating penalty until the listing says what it is.
A correction to this guide
An earlier version of this guide graded more than 20 silicone and plastic mats at 15, and two Silpat mats at 10 and 35, on non-stick or fluoropolymer coatings, and told readers that Silpat mats elsewhere were described with PTFE. None of that was in the makers' descriptions. Silpat describes its mats as food-grade silicone and fiberglass mesh. Our grading model had read the words non-stick and non-slip as evidence of a coating. On 16 September 2026 we removed those invented coatings from more than 50 mats, molds and utensils across the site, and paused two listings wrongly filed under the Teflon brand.
What to avoid
- Mats sold as coated, rather than as silicone, where the listing does not say what the coating or the base is.
- Choosing between plain silicone mats on this grade. 77 products sit at the same 65.
- Reading 65 as a clean bill. No maker here has a PFAS statement on record.
For baking specifically, see our parchment and silicone baking mats guide.
Our pick
Based on available materials and data, for baking a plain silicone mat at 65 out of 100 is as well graded as any here, such as the Demarle Silpat Non-Stick Baking Mat, recorded as silicone over fiberglass with no coating. For chopping, the Joseph Joseph Icon Cutting Board Set at 65 is recorded as plain polypropylene. These grades are estimates built from disclosed materials, not laboratory proof, and nothing here is being called PFAS-free or safe by us.
FAQ
Do silicone baking mats contain PFAS?
Silicone is not a fluorinated material, and none of the silicone mats we graded has a PTFE or fluoropolymer coating on record. The makers, Silpat included, say nothing about PFAS on record, so the mats grade 65 rather than higher.
Is a flexible plastic cutting mat a PFAS concern?
Not in our data. Polypropylene and rubber cutting mats are recorded without coatings and grade 65. Plastic cutting boards raise other questions, such as microplastic wear from knife cuts, which our PFAS grade does not measure.
Why did these grades change?
Until 16 September 2026 our records described non-stick coatings on silicone and plastic mats that their makers never mention, and graded them 10 to 15. We removed those invented coatings, and the mats now grade 65 with their peers.
Does a high grade mean a mat contains no PFAS?
No. A grade reflects lower concern based on how each product is described and what its maker states. None of these products came with independent lab data.
