Is Caraway Nonstick Ceramic Medium Baking non-toxic? What it is made of
Caraway's nonstick coating is ceramic-based, a silica-derived polymer system that bonds to an underlying steel or aluminum substrate. Unlike traditional Teflon-type coating (Teflon), ceramic coatings do not release fluorinated gases when heated to normal cooking temperatures, and they lack the synthetic fluorine chemistry that requires PFAS for water and grease repellency. The baking sheet itself is steel or aluminum; the ceramic layer sits on top as the nonstick interface.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
Ceramic coating degradation over time
Ceramic nonstick coatings are mechanically softer than Teflon-type coating and show higher rates of flaking and loss of nonstick function after 1-3 years of typical home use. Once coating integrity is compromised, substrate exposure becomes a concern; manufacturer guidance on replacement timing is not consistently published.
What’s reassuring
Base material not linked to PFAS
The main material recorded for this product is not one associated with PFAS.
Third-party PFAS-free verification
A third party reports verifying this product as PFAS-free.
No PFAS found in lab test
No PFAS detected in independent testing.
Aluminum substrate leaching
Caraway baking sheets typically use aluminum or steel substrates beneath the ceramic coating. No published recalls or third-party testing indicates aluminum leaching from intact ceramic-coated Caraway bakeware, but ceramic coatings can chip with age, potentially exposing aluminum to acidic foods.
Teflon-type coating fume risk
Ceramic coating does not contain Teflon-type coating or its fluorinated precursors, so thermal decomposition to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or other Teflon-type coating degradation fumes is not a hazard mechanism with this product.
Lead
No recalls or published test results have identified lead or cadmium in Caraway ceramic bakeware. Modern ceramic cookware marketed in the US is subject to FDA food-contact limits; however, independent third-party testing of Caraway products for heavy metals in the ceramic layer is not on public record.
Source, ATSDR ↗Fragrance or antimicrobial additives in coating
Caraway does not disclose the addition of fragrance, antimicrobial agents, or colorants in the ceramic nonstick formulation. No established recalls or complaints link the product to off-gassing or skin contact reactions.
The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
Caraway has published third-party verification of PFAS-free formulation and markets this as a core product differentiator. The brand has disclosed no known recalls related to toxic leaching, coating failure, or heavy metal contamination in its ceramic cookware line as of public records. Marketing emphasizes transparency around material sourcing, though independent lab testing of finished products by consumer organizations remains limited.
How it compares in its category
Ceramic nonstick occupies a middle ground between traditional Teflon-type coating cookware (lower acute Teflon-type coating fume risk but PFAS-dependent) and uncoated stainless or cast iron (no coating hazards but requires more oil and skill). Ceramic nonstick typically shows lower concern for Teflon-type coating off-gassing and PFAS, but the coating is mechanically softer and degrades faster than Teflon-type coating under abrasion. Caraway's ceramic sits in the established safer-nonstick category alongside GreenPan and Our Place.
If you buy it
Hand wash only; dishwasher use accelerates ceramic coating wear. Avoid metal utensils and high-heat scouring; use wood or silicone. Do not preheat empty; add food or fat first to prevent localized overheating of the coating. Replace the pan if the ceramic shows visible flaking, crazing, or loss of nonstick function, as exposed substrate may leach trace metals. Normal stovetop and oven temperatures (below 500 F) pose no known fume risk with ceramic.
