Genuine Instapure R8 Replacement Cartridge
Lower-concern water filter with minimal PFAS risk, but brand transparency is absent.
Instapure R8 is a standard activated-carbon replacement cartridge with ion-exchange resin core without PFAS concern claims or status disclosure. Carbon filters are not a significant PFAS exposure route.

What Genuine Instapure R8 Replacement Cartridge is made of, ingredients and materials
The R8 is a replaceable activated carbon cartridge with an ion-exchange resin core, a standard design for point-of-use faucet filters. Activated carbon traps chlorine, taste, and odor compounds by adsorption; ion-exchange resin softens water by swapping dissolved minerals. Neither material is known to leach hazardous byproducts under normal use at tap water temperatures and pressures. The cartridge housing is typically plastic, which remains in brief contact with cold/room-temperature water, minimizing leaching risk.
What’s concerning
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Bacterial growth in unmaintained filter housing
If cartridge is not replaced on schedule or if water stagnates in the filter head, bacteria and mold can colonize the housing and exhausted carbon. Regular replacement (every 2-3 months) mitigates this; infrequent replacement or periods of non-use increase risk.
Activated carbon dust or particle shedding
New or recently replaced cartridges may release loose carbon particles into water, which are harmless if swallowed but unpleasant. A 5-10 second flush before first use or after installation removes most loose material.
Reduced contaminant removal when cartridge is exhausted
If cartridge is not replaced on schedule, filter effectiveness declines sharply. Water may pass through with residual chlorine and odors, though no acute toxins accumulate. This is a functional failure rather than a direct hazard but increases exposure to unfiltered tap water contaminants.
What’s reassuring
Base material not linked to PFAS
The main material recorded for this product is not one associated with PFAS.
BPA & bisphenols
The cartridge plastic is in contact only with cold tap water for brief duration. No documented leaching of BPA or plasticizers has been reported for this product model. Industry testing of faucet filter housings typically shows minimal migration under normal use conditions.
Source, FDA ↗Ion-exchange resin degradation or bead release
Resin beads can fragment if the cartridge is dropped or subjected to pressure shock, potentially releasing small resin particles. Normal domestic water pressure and handling do not trigger this; no reports exist for the R8 under standard use.
The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
Instapure (owned by 3M) does not publish third-party test reports or NSF/ANSI certifications for the R8 line on its consumer website. The brand makes no public statement on PFAS filtration or supply-chain testing. No recalls or safety incidents specific to this cartridge model are on record in FDA or CPSC databases. Absence of transparency is typical for budget faucet filters but limits independent verification.
How it compares in its category
Faucet-mounted cartridges like the R8 offer convenience but lower contaminant removal than pitcher or undersink filters. NSF-certified competitors (Brita, PUR) publish third-party efficacy data; Instapure does not. The R8's carbon-and-resin design is industry standard and does not carry unusual hazard profiles compared to similar products at this price point. Longevity and flow rate are primary differentiators, not safety.
If you buy it
Replace the cartridge every 2-3 months (or per flow-rate slowdown) to prevent bacterial biofilm buildup inside exhausted carbon. Do not use the filter with water above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Store unopened cartridges in a cool, dry place; do not expose to direct sunlight or heat. Flush the cartridge for 5 seconds before first use to remove loose carbon particles.
