Instapure R5 Replacement Filter 2-Pack
Lower-concern filter type with no PFAS red flags, but brand transparency is weak.
Instapure R5 uses activated carbon media and plastic housing, standard materials posing minimal PFAS concern compared to nonstick or water-repellent treatments. No brand PFAS disclosure exists.

What Instapure R5 Replacement Filter 2-Pack is made of, ingredients and materials
The R5 uses activated carbon as its primary filtration medium, a porous form of carbon that traps chlorine, odors, and some chemical contaminants through adsorption rather than chemical reaction. The housing is plastic (polypropylene or similar polymer typical of faucet filters). Activated carbon itself is inert and does not leach hazardous compounds into water under normal use. The plastic housing material does not contact hot water (cold-line faucet filters operate below 60°C), eliminating the leaching risk that occurs with heated plastics.
What’s concerning
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Bacterial growth in filter media if not replaced on schedule
Activated carbon can harbor bacteria and biofilm after extended use or stagnation, particularly in warm or humid conditions. Regular replacement (every 2-3 months) mitigates this; neglect increases risk of pathogens passing into filtered water.
Loose carbon particles (fines) shed during initial use
Carbon filters typically release black dust or small particles in the first few filter cycles. Flushing for 5 seconds before use removes most fines; this is an inconvenience rather than a health hazard if done correctly.
Reduced contaminant removal efficacy over time
Carbon becomes saturated and loses adsorptive capacity after the rated filter life. Using filters beyond 3 months may allow chlorine, odors, and some chemicals to pass through unfiltered. Not a direct safety hazard but undermines the product's protective benefit.
Lead
Instapure R5 is not certified by NSF for lead reduction or other heavy metals; basic carbon filters reduce chlorine and taste/odor but do not address lead-in-pipes hazards. Users relying on this filter for lead protection may have false confidence.

Base material not linked to PFAS
The main material recorded for this product is not one associated with PFAS.
PFAS
Faucet filters are cold-water only and polypropylene housing is food-contact approved. No known leaching of BPA, phthalates, or other polymer additives under normal conditions; risk only increases if applied to hot-water lines (improper use).

The brand's record and disclosure
Instapure is a long-established water filter brand (owned by Zerowater parent company) but maintains minimal public disclosure on material sourcing, manufacturing standards, or third-party testing beyond basic NSF claims. No major recalls or contamination incidents are on record for Instapure faucet filters. The brand does not prominently communicate sourcing of activated carbon or housing polymers, limiting confidence in supply-chain oversight compared to competitors like Brita or PUR that publish more transparency statements.
How it compares in its category
Faucet-mounted carbon filters like the R5 operate at room temperature and avoid complex chemistry or pressure systems. The R5 is mid-tier in price and performance; it filters similar contaminants to PUR faucet filters but offers fewer certifications (e.g., lead reduction claims). Replacement-filter 2-packs are standard practice and reduce packaging waste compared to single units.
If you buy it
Replace filters every 2 to 3 months or after filtering approximately 100 gallons, whichever comes first; performance degrades as carbon becomes saturated and bacterial biofilm may develop in stagnant cartridges. Run water for 5 seconds before filtering after installation and after any period of non-use to flush loose carbon dust. Do not use on hot-water lines or expose to freezing temperatures. Store unused filters in a cool, dry place; discard after the replacement window to prevent microbial growth and reduced filtration.
