PFAS in Waterproof Phone Chargers and Power Banks, 15 Graded

We graded 15 phone chargers and power banks, from Belkin and Samsung wall chargers and magnetic packs to Techsmarter rugged power banks and two unbranded solar chargers. All 15 grade in our Excellent band, 11 at 85 out of 100 and four at 75. None has a water-repellent coating on record.

The four at 75 are the waterproof and solar models. That is not because waterproofing added a PFAS concern, and the section below explains what the ten points actually are.

How we graded these

Every grade here is a model-based estimate built from publicly available product information and manufacturer disclosures, not a lab test performed by our team. A high score means lower concern based on reviewed sources, never PFAS-free and never safe. None of these makers publishes a PFAS statement for these products, and none carries third-party verification. Look up any charger in our PFAS product finder.

What the ten points between 85 and 75 are

All 15 start from the same low electronics baseline and carry a penalty because the maker says nothing specific about PFAS. The 11 at 85 were also recorded with a credit for materials not associated with PFAS. The four at 75, the waterproof and solar models, were recorded with only a plastic housing and no credit. Their materials are no different in kind from the Belkin and Samsung packs above them, so we would not choose between them on this grade.

A correction to this guide

An earlier version of this guide said waterproof and solar chargers graded Poor at 40 because of the gaskets and coatings needed to survive water, and advised readers to prefer non-waterproof chargers. That was wrong. All four had a waterproof coating or treatment in their records that their listings never describe. Our grading model had read the word waterproof as evidence of a coating. On 16 September 2026 we removed that invented coating from 392 waterproof electronics records and rewrote the analysis on each product page.

The same guide also described two unbranded solar chargers as Samsung products. They were filed under Samsung in our catalog by mistake, and Samsung does not sell them. We no longer attribute them to any brand.

What to watch for

  • Chargers or power banks sold with a fabric pouch or cover described as water-repellent with no chemistry named. None of the 15 here is recorded with one.
  • Choosing a non-waterproof power bank over a waterproof one on PFAS grounds. Our data does not support it.
  • Reading 85 as a clean bill. No maker here has published a PFAS statement.

For cases, pouches and cables, see our waterproof electronics guide and waterproof phone cases guide.

Our pick

Based on available materials and data, choose on capacity, charging speed and whether you need it rugged, because all 15 are in our Excellent band. The Belkin UltraCharge 3-in-1 Qi2 Foldable Magnetic Charger at 85 is a strong home charger, and if you need something for the outdoors, the Techsmarter 10,000mAh Waterproof Wireless Power Bank at 85 has no coating on record. These grades are estimates built from disclosed materials, not laboratory proof, and nothing here is being called PFAS-free or safe by us.

FAQ

Do waterproof power banks contain PFAS?

Not because they are waterproof, in our data. The waterproof and solar power banks we graded are recorded as plastic housings with no water-repellent coating, and they grade 75. Their makers publish no PFAS statement, so we record lower concern based on materials rather than a confirmed absence.

Why did the waterproof chargers used to grade 40?

Our records described a waterproof coating on them that the listings never mention. We removed those invented coatings on 16 September 2026, and the waterproof models now grade 75.

Are Belkin and Samsung chargers PFAS-free?

We cannot confirm that. The Belkin and Samsung chargers we graded are recorded as plastic, aluminum and steel with no coating of concern and grade 85, but neither brand has a PFAS statement on record for them.
