Andie Women's The Amalfi One-Piece Swimsuit
Skip or request PFAS transparency, typical swimwear often uses PFAS-based water-repellent coating coatings.
Andie makes no public disclosure about PFAS use or avoidance in this swimsuit. Swimwear commonly employs water-repellent treatments that may contain legacy PFAS compounds.

What Andie Women's The Amalfi One-Piece is made of, ingredients and materials
Andie's Amalfi is a nylon-spandex blend with a water-repellent coating (water-repellent coating) finish. The nylon and spandex fibers themselves are chemically stable and not known to leach into skin or water during normal wear. The water-repellent coating is the concern, these finishes historically relied on PFAS compounds (PFAS "forever chemicals") to create water beading. Even water-repellent coating formulations marketed as having lower PFAS concern sometimes use alternative fluorochemicals with incomplete safety data. Rinsing after saltwater or chlorine use removes salt residue but does not remove the coating itself.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.
PFAS
Water-repellent coating finishes on nylon swimwear are historically PFAS-based. Andie does not disclose coating chemistry. PFAS does not significantly leach into skin during wear but accumulates in environment and drinking water via textile manufacturing and disposal.
Source, ATSDR ↗Formaldehyde / VOCs
Dyes and water-repellent coating coatings can be cross-linked with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents to improve durability. Swimwear is rinsed frequently, reducing residual formaldehyde exposure compared to untreated textiles, but off-gassing during storage in sealed packaging is theoretically possible.
Source, ATSDR ↗Spandex degradation and microfiber shedding
Nylon-spandex blends shed microfibers during washing and wear, especially as elastane breaks down under UV and chlorine stress. This is not a direct health hazard to the wearer but contributes to microplastic water pollution. High chlorine exposure accelerates degradation.
What’s reassuring
Azo dyes
No public record of azo dye violations or testing failures for Andie swimwear. Nylon takes acid and disperse dyes; restricted azo dyes (those yielding carcinogenic amines) are prohibited in EU and US apparel but enforcement relies on supplier certification, not product testing.
Heavy metals
No documented recalls or testing data for Andie swimwear involving cadmium, lead, or other heavy metals in colorants. Industrial standards restrict these, but no brand-specific assurance exists for this product.

The brand's record and disclosure
Andie (owned by Paragraph, a Los Angeles-based swim label) does not publicly disclose water-repellent coating chemistry, PFAS testing, or manufacturing certifications on their website or product labels as of available records. No major product recalls or chemical controversies are documented for this brand. The absence of transparency on fluorochemical use is common in budget-to-mid-tier swimwear but contrasts with brands that have adopted PFAS-free coatings or explicitly state their chemical policy.
How it compares in its category
Most commercial nylon swimwear uses PFAS-based or fluorinated water-repellent coating finishes for chlorine and saltwater resistance. Andie sits in the typical middle ground, affordable, no known testing shortcuts, but no transparency advantage over competitors. Premium brands (Summersalt, Girlfriend Collective) increasingly disclose PFAS avoidance; budget brands rarely do. This product offers no differentiation in chemical safety profile.
If you buy it
Rinse thoroughly in fresh water immediately after saltwater or chlorine exposure to remove salt and chlorine residue, which can degrade the water-repellent coating and accelerate wear. Do not machine wash hot (use cold water, gentle cycle) or tumble dry, as heat can strip the water-repellent coating and potentially release volatile compounds from synthetic fibers. Replace when elastic becomes inelastic, seams fray, or color fades significantly (typically 1-2 years with weekly use). Store dry and away from direct sunlight to slow UV degradation of nylon and spandex.
