ASOLO SWAMP GTX BOOT
Skip until Asolo discloses water-repellent coating chemistry or certifies PFAS-free.
Asolo's Swamp GTX boot uses Gore-Tex waterproofing and standard water-repellent coating treatment on leather and nylon. The brand provides no PFAS disclosure or testing data, leaving chemical composition uncertain.

What ASOLO SWAMP GTX BOOT is made of, ingredients and materials
The Swamp GTX uses leather (upper), nylon (lining and structure), and a Gore-Tex membrane bonded underneath for waterproofing. The water-repellent coating (water-repellent coating) coating on the outer leather surface is not specified by Asolo and is the source of PFAS risk. Leather itself does not inherently contain PFAS, but the chemical treatment applied to make it water-repellent almost certainly does under current industry practice. Nylon is stable under normal wear but can off-gas during manufacturing; most off-gassing occurs before retail sale.
What’s concerning
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.

No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
PFAS
Asolo does not disclose the water-repellent coating chemistry. Industry standard practice typically uses fluorinated compounds (legacy PFOA/PFOS or newer PFCA alternatives), all of which are persistent environmental contaminants. This is the primary chemical hazard for this boot.
Source, ATSDR ↗Azo dyes in leather or nylon
Leather tanning and dyeing can involve azo dyes, which may cleave into hazardous amines under sweat, friction, or heat. No specific reports exist for Asolo Swamp GTX, and natural leather tanning sometimes avoids heavy azo use, but this is not confirmed for this model.
Formaldehyde / VOCs
Leather finishing resins and shoe adhesives may contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing agents. Exposure risk is low during normal wear (dry conditions, external contact) but increased if the boot is worn damp or with prolonged skin contact.
Source, ATSDR ↗Heavy metals
If the leather is chrome-tanned (industry standard), residual chromium may be present. Dermal absorption during normal wear is low, but sweat or abrasion in damp conditions could marginally increase it. No testing on Asolo boots is on record.
Source, FDA ↗Antimony in polyester synthetic materials
If the nylon lining or structural components contain polyester blends, antimony may be present as a polymerization catalyst. Exposure during boot wear is minimal, as contact is internal and brief.
The full breakdown
The brand's record and disclosure
Asolo has not publicly disclosed the chemistry of its water-repellent coating treatments or committed to PFAS-free formulations. The brand does not advertise third-party certifications (such as Bluesign or OEKO-TEX) that would verify absence of restricted substances in the finished boot. This silence is typical of many heritage footwear brands that have not prioritized chemical transparency. Without certification or disclosure, buyers cannot verify whether the water-repellent coating uses legacy PFOA/PFOS, newer fluorinated alternatives (PFCAs), or non-fluorinated options.
How it compares in its category
Most waterproof hiking and work boots rely on water-repellent coating coatings; the Swamp GTX is not unusual in this regard. Brands like Salomon and some Merrell lines have begun publishing water-repellent coating information or pursuing PFAS-free certifications, setting a higher transparency bar. Leather boots that undergo less aggressive water treatment (accepting shorter water-repellent coating lifespan) or those using non-fluorinated repellents exist but remain uncommon at this price and performance tier. The Gore-Tex membrane itself is not a source of PFAS concern; the external water-repellent coating is the risk factor.
If you buy it
Clean and dry the boot promptly after wet use to prevent bacterial growth in the nylon lining and leather creasing. Avoid machine washing and high heat (do not exceed 60°C if spot-cleaning); leather and Gore-Tex can delaminate or shrink. Reapply a non-fluorinated water-repellent coating treatment (such as wax-based or paraffin products) after 1-2 seasons of heavy use, which also reduces reliance on the original unknown treatment. Replace the boot when the sole wears, leather creases crack, or Gore-Tex no longer sheds water reliably (typically 3-5 years of regular use).
