Men's Shimano Explorer Rain Jacket
Shimano does not disclose PFAS use in water-repellent coating treatment. Skip if PFAS-conscious.
Rain jackets typically use water-repellent coating coatings that often contain PFAS, but Shimano provides no public disclosure of their treatment chemistry. Without verification, assume traditional fluorinated water-repellent coating.

What Men's Shimano Explorer Rain Jacket is made of, ingredients and materials
This jacket is 100% polyester with a water-repellent coating (water-repellent coating) coating applied to the fabric surface. Polyester itself is chemically stable and does not leach into skin under normal wear. The water-repellent coating treatment, however, is where chemical risk concentrates, Shimano does not disclose whether this uses PFAS-based fluorocarbons (the industry standard) or newer alternatives. If PFAS-based, microscopic amounts can migrate with heat, friction, or laundering, particularly during the first few washes.
What’s concerning
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.

No PFAS disclosure

PFAS
Shimano does not disclose water-repellent coating chemistry. Industry default is PFOA/PFOS-alternative fluorocarbons (PFCAs) applied during manufacture. No independent testing found; assume PFAS-treated unless proven otherwise.
Source, ATSDR ↗Formaldehyde / VOCs
Polyester garments sometimes receive formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resist or crease-setting treatments. Shimano does not publish finishes list. Off-gassing is minimal in outdoor jackets vs. bedding, but possible in first weeks of ownership.
Source, ATSDR ↗Coating degradation and inhalation risk
As water-repellent coating deteriorates over time through washing and wear, microparticles of coating can shed. If PFAS-based, inhalation of degraded coating dust is a low-level chronic exposure route not well-studied in consumer textiles.
What’s reassuring
Azo dyes in polyester fabric
Polyester textiles can contain azo dyes linked to allergic contact dermatitis and carcinogenic aromatic amine breakdown, but no specific recalls or testing for Shimano jackets. Unlikely to migrate to skin under normal wear; risk increases with poor dye fixation in cheap dyes.
Antimony in polyester
Antimony trioxide is used as a catalyst in polyester synthesis but remains locked in the polymer matrix and does not migrate to skin or washwater under normal use conditions. No established hazard from wearing polyester garments.
How is this PFAS grade calculated?
The brand's record and disclosure
Shimano is a Japanese cycling and fishing gear manufacturer known for engineering quality but not for transparency on chemical inputs. The company has not published a PFAS policy, SafeChoice certification, or third-party testing results for this jacket line. No formal recalls for chemical hazards have been documented, but the absence of disclosure suggests water-repellent coating treatment is not screened for lower concern alternatives. Shimano's silence on the topic is standard for outdoor apparel brands not under activist pressure.
How it compares in its category
Most rain jackets in this mid-range segment use fluorocarbon water-repellent coating coatings, making Shimano typical rather than exceptional. Brands like Patagonia and Arc'teryx increasingly offer PFAS-free water-repellent coating alternatives (paraffin, silicone, or wax blends), though at higher price. Budget rain jackets almost universally use PFAS-based coatings; Shimano's positioning and lack of disclosure suggest it likely does too. If PFAS avoidance is essential, you would need to switch to brands with explicit PFAS-free claims.
If you buy it
Wash separately in cool water on gentle cycle before first wear to reduce any surface coating residue. Avoid machine drying or direct heat, which can increase migration of coating components. Do not iron or use near high heat. The water-repellent coating will degrade over 2-3 years depending on wash frequency; reapplication kits exist but re-treat with caution (home kits often contain PFAS). Replace when water no longer beads off, rather than trying to extend lifespan through aggressive treatment.
