Arc'teryx · Waterproof Winter Gloves
Arc'teryx Venta GTX Gloves
High PFAS risk from Gore-Tex, Arc'teryx discloses nothing about treatment chemicals.
Arc'teryx Venta GTX gloves use Gore-Tex, a Teflon-type coating laminate containing Teflon-family coating, a well-established PFAS material. Arc'teryx withholds disclosure about whether additional water-repellent coating treatments containing PFAS were applied to the nylon shell. No independent lab data or PFAS-free certification exists.

What Arc'teryx Venta GTX Gloves is made of, ingredients and materials
The Venta GTX uses a Gore-Tex membrane, which is a Teflon-type coating (polytetrafluoroethylene) laminate bonded to nylon shell fabric. Gore-Tex achieves waterproofing by coating the membrane with Teflon-family coating and applying water-repellent coating (water-repellent coating) treatments that historically relied on PFAS chemicals like PFOA and PFOS. The membrane itself is thermally stable and does not off-gas Teflon-type coating fumes at normal hand temperatures, but the water-repellent coating treatment and any fluorinated finishes on the outer nylon layer are potential sources of PFAS leaching into skin and sweat over the product lifetime.
What’s concerning
Category baseline
The starting point for this type of product, before anything specific to this product is counted.
No PFAS disclosure
No public statement from the brand about PFAS in this product.
Waterproof / stain-resistant treatment
Water-repellent coating treatments have historically used PFAS.
PFAS
Gore-Tex membranes typically use fluorinated water repellents. Arc'teryx discloses no transition to PFAS-free alternatives, and Gore-Tex manufacturer does not guarantee PFAS-free formulations across all product lines. Skin contact and sweat absorption are exposure pathways.
Source, ATSDR ↗Nylon polymer degradation and microfiber shedding
Outer nylon shell undergoes mechanical wear and UV exposure over time. Microfiber fragments may be released during laundering or as the glove ages, particularly at seams and high-friction areas. Arc'teryx does not test or disclose microfiber shedding rates.
Adhesive or coating toxins in seams and laminate bond
Gore-Tex lamination uses polyurethane or acrylic adhesives to bond membrane to nylon. Formulations are proprietary; potential leachates include unreacted isocyanates or plasticizers, though risk is low at skin contact temperatures and pH.
What’s reassuring
Azo dyes in nylon shell and lining
Arc'teryx is a mainstream outdoor brand with supply-chain standards, but they do not publish restricted substance lists specific to glove dyes. No recalls or contamination reports exist for this product line; hazard is general category risk, not Arc'teryx-specific.
Thermal stability of Teflon-type coating membrane
Teflon-type coating remains chemically inert below 300C; hand use does not approach thermal decomposition. No fume risk under normal winter glove conditions.
How is this PFAS grade calculated?
The brand's record and disclosure
Arc'teryx has not publicly disclosed what specific fluorochemicals are used in their Gore-Tex products or whether they have transitioned to PFAS-free water-repellent coating alternatives. The brand maintains no accessible chemical transparency policy for outerwear, and Gore-Tex itself does not mandate PFAS-free formulations across its licensees. Arc'teryx has faced no recorded recalls or regulatory actions related to chemical content in gloves, but the silence on PFAS is a deliberate choice rather than certification of safety.
How it compares in its category
Gore-Tex is the premium waterproofing standard in winter gloves and carries inherent PFAS risk that most competing brands (including those using Gore-Tex) also share. Some brands offer non-fluorinated alternatives (wool, synthetic insulation with mechanical water resistance), but these trade breathability and durability. Arc'teryx Venta GTX sits in the high-performance niche where waterproofing without Teflon-type coating-based laminates is not yet standard; competing Gore-Tex gloves from Mammut, Black Diamond, and others face identical chemical exposure.
If you buy it
Wear gloves with clean hands to minimize sweat reactivity with surface treatments. Wash hands after removal to reduce dermal contact with any leached fluorochemicals. Launder gloves only when visibly soiled (frequent washing increases PFAS elution); use cool water and air dry to preserve membrane integrity. Replace after 3-5 years of regular use or when seams fail or membrane delaminates, as aging membranes may shed microparticles and concentrate residual treatments.
